Which one of you...

punched me in my sleep last night?? I have an unexplainable fat lip.

It's that time again...

Time for my regular "here's what I'm taking next quarter" post.

Summer Session II is going to look like this:
PHI 30: Intro to the Philosophy of science (??)
HIS 17B: History of the U.S. (??)

2 classes that I don't want to take, but they're required for my major. No big deal.

Fall 07 is going to look a little like this:
HDE 117: Longevity (hmm)
HDE 140/140L: Practicum working with young children (yay!)
UWP 104E: Writing in the Sciences (barf)
ART 2: Drawing I (yippeee!)

I wasn't supposed to be able to sign up for the drawing class (major restrictions) but somehow I punked the UC system and now i'm registered (???). I don't know why that happened though.

It's 17 units total. The practicum consists of me hanging out with little kids for a few hours on monday and wednesday morning. We also have discussion and lecture for that. After fall, I'll only have 2 more classes to take for my major, and the rest of my time at UCD could be spent either minoring in something (probably psych if anything) or taking whatever prereqs I need for grad school (if i've figured out which grad school program I want to go into at that point).

Anywho, that's all for now.

Consensus

So, remember how I drew a walnut? It turns out that wasn't a walnut, it was a potato. I didn't used to think it was a potato, but now I see that it actually is. And that's because I drew another walnut today that is definitely a walnut.

Someday I'll scan some stuff so this makes sense to anyone scratching their heads right now.

"Be Not Offended"

So, i'm gonna build a little hypothetical situation here. Let's say someone were to come up to me and say "Hey, that pink shirt looks stupid!"

It seems like there's two things that could happen: I could get offended, or I could not get offended.

I can think of a few good reasons why I would not be offended in this situation:
1. I'm not even wearing a pink shirt.
2. I know for a fact that the shirt does not look stupid.

So, what situation then provides for someone to be offended? When does it really rub them the wrong way and get under their skin?

I think one possible such situation would be if someone left the house that day thinking that the shirt might look kind of stupid. Or perhaps if the person wore that shirt solely for the purpose of impressing others, not because they liked it or thought it was comfortable. Essentially, any amount of insecurity about the shirt makes the person susceptible to becoming offended. This might be a stretch, but I bet there's a pretty strong correlation between the amount of insecurity and the amount of offense taken.

I've seen this trend in my own life and in the lives of others. If someone comes up to you and says something that you really know isn't true, it's very easy to brush it off. But if someone says something that you've worried that it might be true, it can really get under your skin. I think then that it's a good idea to try to notice what offends you so you can know where your insecurities lie. That might be the first step to not letting things people say offend you at all.

So, would it rub me the wrong way if someone said I was too shy and reserved? No way. Would I be offended if someone said I was ugly/stupid/fat? Nope. I can think of a few things that might get to me, but I'm not about to let you guys in on my weaknesses before I've tackled them =)
